Abstract
This artwork relates to the territory by critically reimagining the colonial narrative of the “discovery” of the Amazon. Through a colorful, almost satirical style, the painting juxtaposes Spanish conquistadors and missionaries with lush Amazonian landscapes, exoticized Indigenous women, and symbolic jungle animals. The exaggerated poses and fantastical elements, such as the mermaid figure and the pink river dolphin, highlight the absurdity and violence of colonial fantasies imposed upon the land and its peoples. Rather than a neutral historical account, the work exposes how the Amazon was not discovered but invaded, and how its territory—both physical and symbolic—was reshaped through conquest and myth.
