Through his paintings, the artist conveys this Indigenous community’s cultural and spiritual richness, preserving and sharing their traditions, worldviews, and ways of life. By portraying Indigenous leaders and their interactions with nature, the artwork contributes to the documentation and promotion of Ashaninka cultural heritage, helping to keep their identity and legacy alive in the context of a constantly changing world.
Casanto’s paintings are filled with symbolism from the Ashaninka community in the Peruvian Amazon. The artist depicts the interaction between humans, animals, and natural entities like rivers and mountains in their natural environment through landscapes. He also creates portraits of Indigenous leaders from these communities who serve as spiritual guides. With these images, the artist establishes representations of Indigenous identities, incorporating their cosmologies and ways of understanding the world into his work.
