Abstract
This artwork is related to cultural heritage as it incorporates visual and symbolic elements from Indigenous cultures of the Amazon region. The tribal designs on the fish’s body and the representation of the forbidden lake reflect the cultural richness of Indigenous communities that have inhabited the Amazon for generations. Additionally, by evoking Indigenous beliefs and cosmologies that attribute profound spiritual significance to nature and its inhabitants, the artwork contributes to preserving and transmitting important aspects of the region’s cultural heritage. This artistic representation serves as a means to remember and honor the traditions and wisdom of Indigenous communities, thus aiding in their preservation and dissemination in contemporary society.
This painting presents a magical realist scene set in the heart of the Amazon. At the center of the artwork, there is an enigmatic forbidden lake. Its surface reflects a starry sky, creating a visual fusion between the earthly and the celestial realms. The lake is surrounded by lush vegetation, with tall trees and majestic palm trees leaning toward the water in reverence to the region’s natural beauty. In the center of the lake emerges a fish of mythical proportions. Its body is adorned with intricate patterns reminiscent of Indigenous tribal designs. What is most astonishing is its long, serpentine tongue extending towards the night sky as if reaching out to touch the stars. This image evokes the beliefs and cosmologies of the region’s Indigenous people, where animals and nature are infused with deep spiritual significance.
