Abstract
The artwork of Las Nietas de Nono is closely connected to the notion of territory, as it focuses on the production and consumption of food, processes that are intricately linked to the geographical and cultural environment in which they take place. These artworks explore the connection between the land, the landscape, and agriculture, highlighting how the diversity of territories influences the foods that are produced and consumed.
In Foodtopia: after all, territory 2020, Mulowayi and Mapenzi embarked on a journey of sustenance through hunting and gathering fruits. Exploring abandoned buildings, they hunted invasive iguanas and prepared meals using the gathered food. The quest for a ‘foodtopia’ unfolds against Puerto Rico’s colonial history and reliance on imported food. This search takes on particular significance during the COVID-19 pandemic when supermarkets and public spaces were deemed hazardous and prone to infection in Puerto Rico.
