Abstract
“The Sarcophagi were created during the last year and a half of his life, amid bouts of weakness and fatigue that forced the artist to abandon the studio for days and weeks at a time. Zapata had planned twelve from the beginning, all of which he completed. However, there is one left unfinished. It stands apart from the others in the series because it lacks paint and any additional elements or markings. This stripped-down yet meaningful object—the final point in a process filled with sorrow and pain—is the one that best illuminates both the whole and its parts; that is, the close relationship that existed and still exists between the other works we admire today and the stoic agony of Luis Fernando Zapata.” —Álvaro Medina
