Abstract

Signs of Protest is a series of banners, objects, and props that function as tools of political theory, art, and activism. This particular banner was produced as part of the 30th anniversary of ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) and displays the slogans “Silence = Death, Anger = Action, Action = Life,” framed within the pink triangle symbolizing the LGBTIQA+ community. The piece was featured in Nobody Promised You a Tomorrow: 50 Years After Stonewall (2019), an exhibition held in honor of the six-day uprising in response to a police raid at the Stonewall gay bar in New York in 1969. Historically, this event is considered the first time the LGBTIQA+ community stood up against a system that persecuted their dissent and is regarded as a catalyst for the movement for their rights and representation.
