Abstract
This portrait of Lorenzo Jaramillo was made during the 1980s, a period when Jaramillo was also creating portraits of Luis Caballero in Paris. Far removed from the erotic character typical of Caballero’s work, one can sense the closeness and friendship between the two artists. Here, the draftsman’s unfinished lines fluidly convey the bodily expression and the defiant gaze of the model, capturing the spirit through gesture. Lorenzo Jaramillo died in 1992 due to complications related to AIDS.
In addition to their keen perception of the human body and remarkable fluency in drawing, Luis Caballero and Lorenzo Jaramillo shared both education and friendship with other masters such as Antonio Roda, finding in the male form a language through which to express their deepest anxieties and existential unrest.
