Abstract
Are We Free!? is a video that presents a sequence of theatrical scenes and tells the story of two young homosexual men fleeing repression in their home country during the 1960s. In a surreal and allegorical manner, the piece follows the characters as they explore a new sense of freedom far from the conservative Latin American environment, encountering various challenges along the way. The work, which carries a strong autobiographical component for Cárdenas, is included in the exhibition as a tribute to all those who have been persecuted for their sexual orientation and subjected to moral harassment.
